The Levens Local History Group - Meetings in 2024
2024 Speaker Programme
On Thursday 16 May LLHG will hear Paul Lewis (CEO of Lewis Conservation speak about Gaythorhe Hall in Asby. An outlier of the Levens Hall Estate, Paul describes it as follows - Not only is it the first Renaissance building in Cumbria, but it is set in an ancient landscape with evidence of farming going back at least 3000 years. The written story of Gaythorne starts in 1239 and by the end of that century was extended to almost 1000 acres and held by the Monks of St Leonard in York. Around the time of the Reformation it was acquired by the Bellingham family, who you will know later held Levens itself. Because it has never been altered in any major way, or the land holding subdivided, it remains the best surviving example of a monastic estate that I have come across, all crowned by a gem of architecture.
